Temple Book Groups

Shir Tikvah has two book groups, each of which meet monthly at members' homes:

The Sunday Morning Book Group has been meeting for many years — we have shared over 100 books together. We generally meet on Sunday mornings during Religious School hours. We alternate fiction and non-fiction titles. Some are on Jewish topics; others not. Our meetings include bagels, coffee, and animated discussion. Occasionally we take a special 'field trip' or invite an author to discuss his or her book with us.

The Sunday Evening Book Group generally meets on the second Sunday of each month at 7 PM. We also read both fiction and non-fiction.

Feel free to join our discussions! You are always welcome to drop by either group. For upcoming schedules and locations, please look for notices in the Temple Newsletter or in the Calendar.

See Significant Jewish Books with reviews and study guides.

Connections: Women of Shir Tikvah
Connections: Women of Shir Tikvah is the women’s organization at the Temple. Connections seeks opportunities to explore what it means to be a woman and Jewish or involved with a Jewish partner in our time. We sponsor 3 events per year that invite reflection, learning, and discussion. The vision of Connections is to be inclusive of all women in the congregation and enable them to meet and connect with other women around issues of importance to them.

Connections welcomes more women to help expand our vision and programming. If you’re interested, please contact the Connections Committee. View our Connections Photo Gallery.

Shir Tikvah Men's Group
Meets first and third Sundays of the month for men interested in connecting with others about issues relevant to their lives. This is not a therapy group and is led by its members. For more information, please contact Steve Joseph.

Men's Softball
After last year's fun as a combined Temple Beth El/Shir Tikvah men's softball team, our Temple will be fielding its own team to play in the Men's Shul Softball League (MSSL), a competitive slow-pitch, high-arc men's softball league of 36 teams. Games are Sunday mornings from 10 AM – noon for 8 weeks, beginning on April 18, 2010. Playoffs culminate in the Kiddush Cup Championship Game at the end of June. A roster of 12–15 temple members and sons (minimum: 25 years old) is needed. For contact information, see Temple Announcements, accessible via the Members' Page.

Shir Chadash: Temple Singers

Shir Tikvah’s choir is named after our signature song — "Shiru L’adonai, Shir Chadash" ("Sing a new song to God"). Our group, which includes teens and adults, is lead by Cantor Beth Levin. We perform at High Holiday services and at Friday evening Shabbat services about 4 times during the year. At our rehearsals we share music, laughter, and personal stories.

Add your voice! We generally rehearse the first and third Wednesday evenings of the month, from 7:30–9 PM. Professional voice training and sight-reading are not necessary. All you have to do is carry a tune and love singing Jewish music. For more information, contact Beth Levin.

Shir Tikvah Band

The Shir Tikvah band consists of fun-loving people with an eclectic mixture of instruments and musical styles. We play for holidays, havdalah gatherings, Israeli dancing, and more.

Come play with us! If you play an instrument, read music, and want to have a great time with fellow musicians, please contact Beth Levin.

Adult Learning (see Adult Education Page)
Lifelong learning is a deeply held Jewish value. In the prayer V'ahavta, we are commanded to teach our children, but Maimonides tells us that to be able to teach our children, we have to learn first. The Adult Learning Committee is a critical component of the Shir Tikvah community. The committee works closely with Rim and the School Director to create new and exciting Adult Learning programs that focus on ritual observance, Hebrew language (both prayerbook and modern), interfaith understanding, Jewish history and culture, and Israel. We also integrate some Adult Learning programs with our Religious School.

Please share your ideas! We often use requests from Temple members to help develop new programs. Indeed, some classes have come about simply because a few congregational members explored a topic of mutual interest. Let us know your thoughts by contacting the Adult Learning Committee.
