BOOKS FOR KRAKOW

Fifth Grade Books for Krakow Project

plant

The Fifth Grade and the Temple Shir Tikvah Tikkun Olam Committee are embarking on an exciting project to collect a wide range of contemporary books and magazines by and/or about Jews for the Czulent Library in Krakow, Poland.

What is Czulent?

Czulent is an organization of young Jewish men and women in Krakow and the surrounding region who have only recently discovered their Jewish roots and now are cultivating their Jewish identity in terms of Jewish culture, history, tradition, and religion. They feel that Jewish identity is valuable, and that they should cultivate and be proud of it. For information about Czulent and Jewish organizations in Poland click here.

Types of Books the Czulent Library Wants

In the librarian’s own words, “We lack books that relate to contemporary Jewish life. The main problem for us is to deal with the many burning questions of our time from a Jewish perspective of Judaism.”

What comes out clearly is the group’s desire to know about how Jews have struggled with, contributed to, and been affected by the most controversial issues of our time.

  • Contemporary and avant-guard Jewish fiction
  • Jewish Art — the more modern, the better (except Chagall, who is easy to find in Poland)

  • Children’s books written by Jewish author, such as Maurice Sendak and Shel Silverstein
  • Women’s and Gender Studies
  • Classical Jewish authors, such as works by Martin Buber, Isaac Bashevis Singer

  • Jewish magazines

  • Postage Donations

Help defray the high cost of mailing books. Make checks payable to Temple Shir Tikvah and put in the memo field "Postage for Krakow books."

    Drop-Off Box

We will have a book and magazine drop-off box at the Mitzvah Table at Religious school on Sundays, beginning March 9th. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the collection, packing, and mailing of books.

Thanks in advance for helping us make this project a success.
