Aging Well in Community event: Protect Yourself from Fraud and Identity Theft

Sunday, March 31, 2024 21 Adar II 5784

1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Come join this discussion led by Alice Diamond on Sunday, March 31 at 1:30 pm, in the Oneg room and learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from becoming a victim of fraud. Did you know that some of the most effective frauds involve scammers who impersonate people who seem to be trying to protect you from fraud? You get a text or email that appears to be from your credit card company asking you if you recently bought an expensive item in a far-away location. The message looks legitimate, using the exact logo of the company. But if you respond, thinking that you are protecting yourself, you may be scammed. Some of the most common scams are identity theft, business impersonation, and computer support. Other scams include sweepstakes, investment/cryptocurrency, check washing, fraudulent sales, grandparent scam, government grants, pet scams, and online banking. Scammers try to get victims “under the ether” by manipulating them into becoming emotional, and often use fear and intimidation to trick victims into visiting an unsafe site by clicking on links in emails or texts. Awareness is key to fighting scams. Research has shown that if someone is aware of specific types of scam, they are much less likely to be victimized.
