Ethics Code

Temple Shir Tikvah

Code of Ethics Policy

Introduction

Temple Shir Tikvah is a vibrant and welcoming multi-generational Reform Jewish congregation, directed by our traditions and faith, yet grounded in the contemporary world. Through communal worship, study and assembly, Shir Tikvah applies the principles of Reform Judaism to the values and conduct of the individual, family and society in which we live.

We welcome each person to bring their whole self to make meaningful connections with others. We strive to hold ourselves to the highest standards of human decency and social responsibility. Because we behave ethically and hold ourselves accountable, Shir Tikvah is a safe, inclusive and sacred space.

This value-based Code of Ethics sets forth the principles and standards of conduct expected for our clergy, congregants, and staff whether participating in a Temple Shir Tikvah activity that is in the building, online, or off-site.

Elements of the Code of Ethics

Temple Shir Tikvah welcomes all who wish to engage with our sacred community.

  • We embrace everyone without distinction, no matter religious background, age, ability, race, ethnicity, nationality, appearance, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, political affiliation, or socioeconomic status.
  • We strive to make all who participate in our community feel a sense of belonging and value, with the expectation that their ideas and concerns can be openly stated and responded to with respect.

Temple Shir Tikvah expects anyone involved in our community to conduct themselves in an honest manner.

  • We promote open and honest communication that allows us to address differences constructively.
  • We protect the confidentiality of privileged information, either about an individual or the temple, and do not disclose it without permission. This includes personnel information such as employment status, compensation, and performance review, as well as personal information about an individual’s health, financial status, or family matters.
  • We conduct financial matters related to temple involvement with complete honesty. For example, we refrain from financial impropriety in decisions regarding restricted, committed, and discretionary funds.
  • We respect the effort of others and do not take credit for their work.
  • We recognize and protect the intellectual property rights of our temple and others. We obey laws governing the use and distribution of copyrighted materials.
  • We make decisions regarding temple-related matters with transparency and accountability, unless confidentiality dictates otherwise. Temple leadership should avoid conflicts of interest and the appearance of conflicts of interest. See Temple Shir Tikvah’s Conflict of Interest Policy.

Temple Shir Tikvah values acting with integrity.  We are expected to conduct ourselves in a manner that brings honor to our congregation and to the community.

  • We act solely in accordance with the temple’s best interest when acting on its behalf.
  • We refrain from using one’s temple position for personal advantage or benefit.
  • We are bound by sacred obligation to uphold the financial commitments of the temple and our personal financial commitments to the temple.
  • We conduct employment practices and related decision-making in an ethical and legal manner. We establish and enforce the policies and procedures that protect the employees of the congregation.

Temple Shir Tikvah embraces the fundamental value of performing acts of loving-kindness.

  • We treat others with respect, fairness, and compassion, including during difficult discussions where conflicting views are shared.
  • We refrain from derogatory speech, gossip, and slander, whether in person or on social media.
  • We oppose bullying, including any unwanted behavior that degrades, humiliates, or oppresses another. Verbal, physical, or cyber bullying is never acceptable.
  • We demonstrate sensitivity to other people’s pain and suffering.

Temple Shir Tikvah believes that we are morally and ethically responsible for one another.

  • We do not tolerate sexual harassment, including unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, physical, written, or visual conduct of a sexual nature.
  • We do not tolerate acts or behaviors that exploit the vulnerability of another, take advantage of a power imbalance, compromise one’s moral integrity or create an intimidating, offensive, abusive or hostile environment.
  • We strive to protect those who appear to be victims of abuse or neglect, including spousal abuse, child abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse and other types of domestic violence.
