Custodian (Part time)

Shir Tikvah’s custodian supports the temple community by ensuring that the facility is clean and well cared for. They possess the physical strength to clean vigorously and move furniture. They also have very good people skills. They interact with Shir Tikvah’s congregants (both adults and children) with kindness and responsiveness. They are quick on their feet, able to shift priorities when needed, and comfortable receiving assignments from different people at different times. They make Shir Tikvah events feel comfortable, welcoming, and effortless.

Responsibilities:

  • Report onsite to temple functions on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Occasional weekday/weeknight shifts may also be requested.
  • Set up tables, chairs, and other items
  • Greet members and visitors as they arrive for events, adhering to best practices for safety and security as laid out by the Director of Administration and the temple’s safety committee
  • Plate and present food for a weekly Friday night oneg (social reception)
  • Clean up after events, including sweeping, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, running the dishwasher, and taking out the trash, compost, and recycling
  • Manage access to the temple parking lot
  • Collaborate with other staff and volunteers to ensure that events run smoothly; consult instruction sheets and setup diagrams for information
  • Ensure the building is stocked with paper goods and cleaning supplies by keeping an inventory and ordering new stock when needed

Work may also include:

  • Completing small projects in and around the building, such as paint touch-ups and small-scale repairs
  • Watering plants
  • Moving items between the temple building, offsite storage unit, and the Winchester transfer station
  • Arranging for table linens to be laundered
  • Setting up audiovisual equipment
  • Other duties as needed

Schedule September through June:

15 to 25 hours a week as follows:

  • Fridays from 5 pm to 11 pm
  • Saturdays and Sundays: as required by the temple calendar
  • Occasional weeknight shifts may be requested, especially during the fall High Holiday season

Schedule July and August:

Flexible up to 15 hours per week

Compensation:

  • $22 to $27/hr based on experience
  • Paid holidays, sick days, and vacation

Required Qualifications:

  • At least one year of work experience in cleaning, maintenance, or a related field
  • Able to move and set up furniture weighing up to 50 pounds. Loads of 15 pounds often need to be lifted 100+ times in succession.
  • Proficient in English comprehension (both reading and aural), plus some ability to speak and write
  • Able to interact respectfully with congregants of different age groups, including children
  • Comfortable communicating electronically by cell phone, tablet, and laptop computer
  • Comfortable working with basic audiovisual equipment such as projectors and amplification systems
  • Good at in-the-moment problem solving; able to stay attentive to their surroundings and respond quickly when a need arises, whether or not they are directly asked.
  • Can reliably provide their own transportation to all required shifts (Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays as needed)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and/or electrical systems
  • Handy; able to conduct repairs around the building and do paint touch-ups
  • Available at least one weekday for routine maintenance and meetings with administrative staff
