Israel Committee Speaker Event: "Strengthening Civil Society in Israel: a talk with Nicole Hod Stroh"

Sunday, April 7, 2019 2 Nisan 5779

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMTemple Shir Tikvah Sanctuary

Left or right, Orthodox or secular, Jewish or Arab -- all sectors of Israeli society need to improve their engagement with the population and government. The nonprofit ANU finds this common need and mentors different groups to help them refine their message and present it effectively. At the center of this broad initiative stands Nicole Hod Stroh, chief operating officer of ANU, where she is responsible for ANU’s strategic planning, operations, resource development, and financial management. Nicole has particular expertise incorporating systems thinking to engage communities and build movements aligned toward a common goal. She is behind the development, leadership and implementation of numerous campaigns and projects in the areas of early childhood, shared society and gender equality. Prior to her work at ANU, Nicole promoted economic development initiatives for Bedouin women in the Negev. Nicole made Aliya from Colombia in 2009. For the past 16 years she has held various management positions in organizations in the US, Latin America and Israel. Nicole holds a BA in Political Science from NYU. A few years ago, Shir Tikvah enjoyed a brief talk by Nicole. Now, thanks to her participation in Harvard's Wexner program, we are lucky to get a fuller overview of the stresses in current Israel and how they can be turned to positive ends. Her main topics will be: * The most striking issues currently affecting the Israeli society: raising inequality, especially among subgroups that are not currently taking part of the economy (Haredi men and Arab women; increasing polarization and tribalism; and the abandonment of the two state solution. * Life in Israel as an immigrant from Colombia, including experiences with violence and with efforts at Jewish/Arab dialog.
