Israel's judicial overhaul and the implications for women's rights in Israel

At the beginning of January 2023, days after the new government was sworn in, the new Minister of Justice in Israel gave a statement on the evening news introducing his plan for a "judicial reform." This plan immediately incited the public in Israel, starting a huge protest movement that has kept on going. Our conversation will focus on 1) what is this government that introduced the proposed reform, and 2) its implications for Israel as a democratic state, in particular for women's rights.

Speaker Biography:

Michal Gera Margaliot is a specialist in policy and gender. Over the past 15 years, Michal has been active in promoting women's rights and raising awareness on the issue. Between the years 2016-2020 Michal was the Executive Director of the Israel Women's Network. Prior to that, Michal served for four years as a parliamentary advisor and chief of staff of MK Merav Michaeli. In the years 2010-2012 she completed her pre-internship and internship at the Orna Lin & Co. law firm, which specializes in labor law. In the years 2007-2010 Michal was the coordinator of the Lafer center for Women's Studies at the Hebrew University. Michal has a BA in philosophy, economics, and political science, and an additional BA and MA in Law, specializing in Gender Studies. She is married to Daniella. They have two children and live in Tel Aviv.
