Pirkei Avot (the ethics of our ancestors) is rabbinic wisdom literature so beloved by that it came to be included in the prayer book so that it could be studied Shabbat afternoon. While only six chapters long it contains some of the most well known pieces of the tradition including pieces such as Hillel’s teaching: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am [only] for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” (Pirkei Avot 1:14) and Rabbi Tarfon’s wisdom, “It is not your responsibility to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.”
We will devote an hour of Shabbat afternoon to studying pearls from this wisdom tradition. Join Rabbi Cari for text study, lively conversation and as always, the opportunity to apply this ancient tradition to our modern lives. If you have any questions please email rabbicari@shir-tikvah.org. No preparation for class is necessary but if you want to see the text in advance they can be emailed upon request the Friday before class.
