Zoomin’ the Omer—Year 2 with Beth Levin and Caroline Lieber. Please join us on Thursdays from 12-12:30pm beginning on April 1st-May 13th.
With the approach of Passover comes the time of the counting of the Omer, from the second night until the day before Shavuot, 49 days. In the Torah, the Omer count (sefirah) is described in agricultural terms, the grain that would be harvested and celebrated ritually. In the 16th century, the Kabbalists conceived the count as a time to take stock of our own sefirot, the seven Divine emanations that humans embody and strive to balance. Though this physical journey did not need to take 49 days—Egypt and Mt. Sinai are not that far apart—the Israelites needed those full 7 weeks to enact an internal psychological shift, moving from newly found freedom to an understanding of the importance of creating a holy and ethical community.
Join us each week for a 30-minute check-in as we “count”—recalling the internal shift that our ancestors experienced on their journey. If you have questions, contact Beth at beth@shir-tikvah.org
